Shadow One

I was sitting in my car that night, it was raining. I was waiting for him to come, but then I saw a man, he was walking fast, looking around, holding a heavy black huge bag. It was so dark, and my car was in the corner, and its lights were turned off. My car’s windows were tinted, my window was open a little bit, I slipped down in my car’s seat, so no one would notice me being in the car. Then I closed the window and kept watching him.

He opened his car’s rear trunk, putting the bag inside it, then closed it. My heart skipped a beat. I kept watching, the man went into his car, turned it on, and started driving. At that moment I made a call saying, “Stay home, don’t go outside until I come back and pick you up.” Then I closed the phone and followed that man’s car slowly from behind. His car number was 292929 with no letters.

I kept following his car until he reached a dark place, my GPS was not catching the location. Then the man entered a forest and started driving inside, and all of a sudden, he stopped. I stopped my car, and immediately turned off the lights, and turned the car off too. I kept watching him from afar. He took the shovel from his backseat, then closed the door of the backseat, and went into the trees.

I was able to see him while I was in my car, because he didn’t go deep into the woods. He started digging a hole. After he finished, he took the heavy black bag out of his car’s rear trunk and threw it inside that hole. “It’s a body!” I whispered to myself. Then he immediately ran into his car and drove so fast. He didn’t bury the body that much, he left it inside the bag and didn’t cover it!

My heart was skipping beats, I didn’t know what to do, call the police, follow him, or look inside the open hole to see who that body was. I pulled all my strength and went out of my car. Then I slowly approached from that open hole, I was able to see the bag clearly, and this really made me concerned. If that man was a murderer, then he wanted to get rid of the body of the person he murdered. He went to a forest to bury that body, and dug a hole, but instead of burying the body he threw it with its bag?! Why would a murderer do something stupid like this?

I approached more because curiosity was killing me, but then I remembered that stepping into the suspected area might distort the evidence. I stepped back. Then I went back to my car, pulled up my phone and called 911, “Hello, I want to report a murder.”

In a half an hour or so,

I went back home, took off my jacket and called on my brother, “Hey Calvin, I’m back. But I need to go to see the detective.” Calvin wasn’t answering. I knocked on his bedroom door, “Calvin? Did you fall asleep?” Then I opened his bedroom door, he wasn’t there. His shoes were beside the door, which means that he is still home. I went to the bathroom; he wasn’t there either. Not even in the kitchen or the living room.

I went to my bedroom, maybe he might be there, but he wasn’t. But I found my window open. I got closer and looked from it and found him drenched in his blood under my window, “Haaaa, C... a... l… v… i… n.” Then I ran immediately downstairs, outside to our house garden, putting my hand around his neck. He was dead. I started crying, trembling, and taking my breath hardly, “No, no, no, no, Calvin, no.” Hugging him, trying to wake him up.

Few hours later,

I was sitting on a chair in the office and my entire clothes were filled with blood, my eyes were so red, and I was barely taking my breath. I was putting my elbows on my legs, grabbing my two hands together under my nose, shaking. “Can you please explain what happened?” The detective asked me. I didn’t answer. “I know what you are through now is a big shock. But I need you to help us, so we can find who did this to your brother?”

I didn’t answer and started crying again. “Caitlyn, you’re a lawyer and a big lawyer and you are the only one who will take your brother’s….” I suddenly looked at him with tears in my eyes in a scary way. He continued, “Look, I know it’s hard, and seeing your brother lying with his blood surrounding him is not an easy thing, but I want to help you, and I want YOU to help us, isn’t that what you always say to your clients?”

I looked at him, then he continued, “Please I need you to calm down, I know you, you can handle this, I really need you to start explaining everything from the beginning. Okay?” I looked at him, crying quietly. “You called 911 and said that you saw someone throwing a body in the forest.” I kept looking at him. “I need you to tell me specifically what you saw, and how you found that man, and why did you follow him, Caitlyn?”

I looked at the detective for a while, then pulled myself all together and started explaining, “Few hours ago after I finished my work here, we wanted to go and eat Sushi in the restaurant…” “We, who?” The detective asked me. I replied crying, “Me and Calvin.” “Okay, and then?”

“Then, while we were on our way, he remembered that he forgot his phone. So, we went back home, and then he went up to get it. And while I was waiting for him in my car I saw that man moving in a suspicious way. And you know me, I couldn’t stop watching him and just ignore. He was holding a black bag, it seemed heavy, he looked around and then put it in his car’s trunk. And that’s how I followed him.

“Caitlyn, what did you see there?” “He dug a hole in the forest and threw the bag and left.” “He didn’t cover it?” “No.” The detective looked at me in a look he had never looked before, so I asked him confused, “What?!” “Caitlyn, when we went there, there was nothing.” I looked at him confused, “What do you mean there was nothing?” “There was nothing. The hole was empty and there was no bag and no body and no footsteps other than yours.” “What?” “Okay, let’s move away from that topic for a couple minutes, and tell me about your brother, how did you throw him?”

I looked at the detective in shock, without saying a word.
